Bracelets were undoubtedly among the earliest items of personal adornment. Even a very low tech society could affix a leather band around the wrist. There are archaeological records indication the use of bracelets dating from 5000 BC, but these are more advanced bracelets than early man would have worn.
Bracelets are worn by both men and women for many different reasons. While gemstone bracelets are pieces of jewelry there are also sports bracelets, identification bracelets, and medical alert bracelets.
Bracelets come in many styles. A bangle is a solid hoop bracelet. Often several are worn and make a pleasant tinkling sound when the arm is moved. Cuff bracelets are a wide band worn around the wrist and were probably among the first bracelets worn by our ancestors in the period before recorded history. There are link bracelets and chain bracelets.
Many materials are
used in the manufacture of bracelets including wood, leather, metal,
beads, gemstones, and even (shudder) plastic. Gemstone bracelets often
incorporate the birthstone of the wearer. A birthstone gemstone
bracelet has special value to the owner because it is not only a thing
of beauty but incorporates their special stone.
